Statements by Rudolf Steiner about North America

“… People pay far too little attention to the East. The decision about Europe will be made there, for Germany will one day be merely an American colony.”

At Pentecost 1924 on the Koberwitz estate in Silesia, in response to a question from Count von Keyserlingk, the visionary gave the following answer:
„It will be essential to create islands of monastic seclusion in the countryside, in which German cultural and spiritual life can still be cultivated.”

In a possibly unpublished lecture from 1920, Rudolf Steiner characterized the nature of North America as follows:
“When we proceed from England and cross over to America, then we must, in the same sense, refrain from calling this Western civilization a civilization at all, but rather savagery. The barbarian tyrannizes heart and soul through the head; the savage tyrannizes the head through what arises from the rest of the organism, through instinctual life. And that is essentially Western life. And this Western life is predisposed toward savagery.

… Study what has asserted itself in the West. They built upon the inexhaustibility of economic life, continually feeding it from the colonies, working out of this inexhaustibility and not being dependent on having to think through this economic life. Western economic life is entirely built on extracting as much as possible from the colonies.

… In the West, the state is always merely decoration; politics have no real significance, for economic thinking predominates. These plutocrats set themselves the task of maintaining all of life as economic life, gradually eradicating everything else that belongs to spiritual life … eradicating spiritual life, gradually dulling political-state life, and absorbing everything into economic life.

… In the West, those who enter the world in such a manner are the true enemies of the threefold social impulse.
… The second type of beings, who take superficiality, empty phrases, and falsehood as their mission, do not want to allow an independent democratic life of the state to arise alongside economic life.”

Rudolf Steiner repeatedly pointed to the incarnation of Mammon from the Bible, of the confusion-bringing Mephistopheles in Goethe’s Faust, as well as the adversary Ahriman, who in the near future would begin to influence humanity starting from the USA.

Is that time now approaching?
